Wine bottle price is at an all-time high
Remember when we told you that wine could start to get more expensive because of this whole Brexit situation? Well, it's already happening, guys, it's already happening. Now, the average price of a bottle is more expensive than ever.
After the average 75cl wine bottle in the UK passed the £5.50 mark for the first time at the end of 2016, the cost hit an all-time high of £5.56 in the first quarter of this year, according to new research by The Wine and Spirit Trade Association.
And this won't be the end of it. "Unfortunately, for both British businesses and consumers, we are clear that this is not a one off adjustment, but rather that wine prices will continue to rise," Miles Beale Chief Executive of the WSTA said.
Maybe it's time to stock up...
TumblrThe reason behind the price hike is the fall in value of the pound, which has led to a rise in the cost of imported goods, making food and drink more expensive. And there's even worse news to come. These figures do not take into account the impact of the 3.9% rise on alcohol duty announced in the March Budget. This adds another 8p to the average priced bottle of wine.
The increase in wine costs comes after the WSTA warned that a "triple whammy" of higher inflation, a weaker pound and possible duty increases could increase Champagne and Prosecco prices in the UK by £1 or 59p per bottle, respectively.
Why will everyone not leave our wine alone?!
